MINNEAPOLIS — A far-left streamer brought in to fire up young voters at a campaign event with Rep. Ilhan Omar instead sparked outrage after he joked about federal immigration agents being injured during protests in Minnesota.
Hasan Piker, appearing Monday night alongside the Minnesota Democrat at an event hosted by Democratic socialist Omar Fateh, recalled his time in Minneapolis during protests over the Trump administration's federal immigration crackdown. Piker told the crowd he thought agents must be "extra racist" to work in frigid winter temperatures before mocking one of them who was injured as the audience laughed, according to Fox News Politics.
"We saw a lot of funny compilations as well, you know. A lot of hip bones were broken. 'Officer Martinez down,'" Piker said.
The remarks were quickly clipped and shared across social media. Conservative activist Laura Loomer posted the video on X, writing: "During his event with Ilhan Omar @IlhanMN, Hasan Piker @hasanthehun proudly spoke about law enforcement getting injured during Minneapolis's pro-open border riots: 'You know, a lot of hip bones were broken. Officer Martinez down.' Hasan and his elected Democrats are sick."
Conservative commentator Andrew Kolvet also flagged the clip on X, noting that when Piker was asked what stuck with him from Operation Metro Surge in Minneapolis, he answered: "Funny compilations" of federal agents being injured.
An Instagram post from the event shows Omar bringing Piker on stage at the town hall gathering.
The event drew immediate backlash, including from members of Omar's own party. Rep. Angie Craig, D-Minn., and Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., publicly condemned Piker, while other Minnesota Democrats called for the event to be canceled as voters prepare to head to the polls ahead of next week's midterm elections, Fox News Politics reported.
Omar's campaign defended her decision to attend, saying the event was intended to mobilize young voters.
Piker has become a polarizing figure within the Democratic Party as he joins prominent candidates on the campaign trail. Some Democrats have embraced him while others have rejected him outright. He has made national headlines for past rhetoric, including a claim that "America deserved 9/11," and has faced accusations of antisemitism over his remarks on Israel and Hamas.
During the Minneapolis event, Piker also told Fateh he was inspired by the "solidarity" and "mutual aid" that followed the deployment of thousands of ICE and Customs and Border Protection agents to Minnesota. Protests that followed resulted in multiple arrests, objects and fireworks thrown at law enforcement, and the disruption of a church service. Two U.S. citizens, Renée Good and Alex Pretti, were killed during interactions with federal law enforcement.
"It wasn't just the networks that were very quickly propped up, the mutual aid that I saw, the protests that sparked up that said, 'We're not going to take it. We're not going to sit aside and watch this administration come and rip our communities apart and kidnap our neighbors,'" Piker said.
The controversy lands less than a week before midterm elections, putting Minnesota Democrats in the awkward position of answering for a streamer whose rhetoric has now been condemned by members of their own delegation. For the men and women in ICE and CBP who were injured in the line of duty, the laughter from a sold-out Minneapolis venue is the story.
Our Take
There's a difference between criticizing immigration policy and cheering when federal officers get their hip bones broken. Hasan Piker crossed that line Monday night, and he did it with a smile while a sitting congresswoman shared the stage.
Ilhan Omar knew exactly who she was bringing to Minneapolis. This is the same Piker who said America deserved 9/11. This is the same Piker who has faced antisemitism accusations over his comments on Israel and Hamas. Omar's campaign says the event was about mobilizing young voters — but what it actually mobilized was a room full of people laughing at injured law enforcement officers.
Notice who rushed to condemn him: Angie Craig, Amy Klobuchar, other Minnesota Democrats. They saw the polling danger coming and ran. But where were they when it mattered? Omar's campaign is still standing by the decision to put him on stage.
Patriots, this is what the Left's immigration agenda looks like when the masks come off. They don't just want open borders. They think it's funny when the men and women tasked with enforcing our laws get hurt doing their jobs.
Every Minnesota voter heading to the polls next week should ask one question: is this what you want your congresswoman platforming? The answer will be on the ballot.
