The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) and participating states have launched a $275 million initiative to recruit and retain nurses in nursing homes, offering up to $40,000 in student loan repayment and a $10,000 stipend for a three-year commitment.
Announced as part of the Nurses for Nursing Homes initiative, the program targets licensed nurses and nursing students willing to serve in qualifying nursing homes in rural or higher labor-shortage areas. CMS has committed $100 million, while states are contributing at least $175 million.
Financial Incentives to Fill Critical Staffing Gaps
Qualified participants may receive up to $40,000 in student loan repayment, a $10,000 stipend, or both, for committing to three years of hands-on care in eligible facilities. The initiative is expected to support more than 4,000 nurses nationwide.
"Staffing is a critical component of nursing home quality," CMS stated, noting the program is funded through civil monetary penalties collected from nursing homes by CMS and states. All 50 states and the District of Columbia are participating.
Targeting Rural and High-Shortage Communities
One hundred percent of rural nursing facilities are eligible, along with additional facilities in higher labor shortage areas—communities that often face significant staffing challenges.
CMS is working with workforce partners to connect nurses with opportunities and build a pipeline into long-term care. Eligible individuals can visit nursesfornursinghomes.cms.gov to review requirements, find open positions, and apply.
