Rep. Robert Garcia (D-CA) told Republican leaders to "lawyer up" Tuesday evening as his party was projected to retake the U.S. House majority, according to Breitbart News. The Long Beach Democrat, who is expected to become chairman of the House Oversight Committee, issued the warning as a blue wave appeared to take hold across the country in the midterm elections.
Democrats retook control of the U.S. Senate and were widely expected to win the House, according to The Guardian. The party flipped competitive House seats in Kentucky, New Jersey, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Ohio, as well as key Senate races.
Garcia, who currently serves as ranking member of the oversight committee, is expected to take the gavel. The oversight committee has broad authority to call witnesses, request government documents, and issue subpoenas. He has said his team is already preparing probes into "Trump family corruption" and the Epstein files, according to Breitbart.
"We have the power to go to the courts on behalf of the House. We have the power of contempt, and not just criminal contempt, but civil contempt that goes to the courts. We have the power of subpoena," Garcia told Punchbowl News, as reported by The Guardian.
Garcia has previously said that if Democrats won, he would lead investigations into Elon Musk's role in the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), the Trump family's business dealings, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) abuses, and the Jeffrey Epstein scandal, according to The Guardian.
Sen. Ron Wyden (D-OR), poised to lead the Senate Finance Committee, also flexed on his potential future authority. "Subpoenas," Wyden wrote on X.
House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan (R-OH) warned that a Democrat House would launch "nonstop investigations." The targets, he said, would be the first family and the next Republican presidential nominee.
President Trump has vowed to preemptively pardon administration officials if Democrats decide to target them. "Well, that's what Biden did. He gave everybody a pardon. I mean, you had the congressional committee, the unselect committee set up. It was a corrupt committee, they were all corrupt. He gave everybody a pardon," the president stated, according to Breitbart.
Social media users pushed back on Garcia's warning. "So now the democrats are gonna waste two years on fake investigations, instead of making things better for the american people? Guess their complaints about trump wasting time and money is now full circle," wrote @OnTheLevelCast on X.
Another user, @VeloJames67, replied on X: "A great way to waste 2 years. Easier to say that you have no plan to improve the lives of Americans."
The midterm results mark a major shift in Washington, with Democrats now positioned to use their congressional power to investigate the Trump administration and its allies. Republicans, who have held the majority in the House and Senate for the past two years, will now face a barrage of oversight requests and subpoenas.
The White House has not yet responded to Garcia's warning. It is not yet known whether Democrats will follow through on the threatened investigations or whether Republicans will mount legal challenges to block subpoenas.
Our Take
Here we go again. The American people sent a clear message on Tuesday, and it wasn't a mandate for endless investigations. Democrats ran on a platform of retribution, and now they're already promising to waste two years on subpoenas and show trials instead of addressing the real issues facing this country: the border crisis, inflation, and the assault on American energy.
They're not interested in oversight; they're interested in revenge.
President Trump saw this coming and has already vowed to protect his administration with preemptive pardons, much like Biden did for his own people. The difference? Trump's pardons would be for officials who have done nothing wrong except serve this country. The Democrats' investigations are a fishing expedition designed to cripple a presidency they couldn't defeat at the ballot box.
Patriots, don't let the media fool you. These aren't "investigations"; they're political weapons. And the Democrats just told you they plan to use them. The question is: will Republicans in Congress fight back, or will they roll over? The American people deserve better than this circus. It's time to hold the new majority accountable before they even take the gavel.
