Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) did not sugarcoat it. In a lengthy post on X Wednesday, Cruz described the 2026 midterm elections as a "blue tsunami" and an "ass kicking" after Democrats swept every statewide race in Texas — including James Talarico's defeat of Attorney General Ken Paxton in the U.S. Senate race and Gina Hinojosa's unseating of three-term Gov. Greg Abbott.
"2026 was not simply a blue wave; it was a blue tsunami. It was an ass kicking," Cruz wrote. "It was not simply a bad 2006 midterm election. It was a Watergate-level repudiation."
The results, projected by the Fox News Decision Desk, mark the first Democratic Senate victory in Texas in nearly four decades and the first Democratic governor in over three decades. Hinojosa also makes history as the state's first Latina governor. Democrats additionally won the lieutenant governor's race, with Vikki Goodwin defeating Dan Patrick, and Nathan Johnson winning the attorney general's race, according to reporting from Fox News and NBC News.
"Nowhere are the consequences of this election greater than Texas," Cruz wrote. "In the Lone Star State, we lost every single statewide election."
He added: "Texas is blue. That is a hard sentence to utter. But Texas, today at least, is blue."
Cruz pinned the defeat on Republicans' failure to address the cost of living. "Food is too high, gas is too high, diesel is too high, insurance is too high, life is too high," he wrote.
He pointed to elevated gas prices, a rise in home and automobile repossessions, and record numbers of weekly plasma donations as signs of real financial strain. "That is very real pain from real Americans, and too many Republican politicians seem like they didn't understand or they didn't care," Cruz said on his podcast, Verdict with Ted Cruz, according to Fox News.
NBC News exit polls found more than 80% of voters said they were worried about the prices of necessities — gas, diesel, food, groceries, utilities, and healthcare. Cruz acknowledged the message. "We need to listen and respond. We need to champion economic policies that make a real difference in working people's lives, and we need to deal with the consequences," he said.
Cruz said he called Talarico to congratulate him on the victory. In his own victory speech, Talarico called for unity and pledged to represent all Texans, tackle economic inequality, and get big money out of politics. "This campaign turned into a movement built by underdogs," he said, emphasizing a politics of love over division.
Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas), who lost the GOP Senate primary in May to Paxton, also acknowledged Republican shortcomings on the economy in an op-ed for The Wall Street Journal. In 2024, voters "trusted Mr. Trump and the Republicans over Kamala Harris and the Democrats to protect their pocketbooks," Cornyn wrote.
The sweep represents a dramatic reversal in a state President Donald Trump won by roughly 14 percentage points in 2024, where Republicans had held every statewide office since 1994. The results were part of a nationwide Democratic surge, with the party also winning control of both chambers of Congress, according to Fox News.
X user Mario Nawfal highlighted Cruz's comments, posting: "Ted Cruz: 'Nowhere are the consequences of this election greater than in Texas.' The losses of the midterms hit hardest in the Lone Star State where Republicans lost EVERY statewide race."
For everyday Texans, the change is immediate: a new governor, a new senator, and a new attorney general will take office in January. The policies that flow from Austin and Washington will shift on energy regulation, border enforcement, and taxes. Republicans who spent decades running the state now find themselves in the minority, with Cruz warning that the party must respond to working families or face more losses.
Our Take
Let's be clear about what happened here: Republicans got shellacked in Texas, and Ted Cruz is one of the few willing to say it out loud. While establishment Republicans hide behind excuses, Cruz is telling the truth — voters are furious about the cost of living, and the GOP did not deliver. That is a failure of courage, not a failure of conservative ideas.
The Talarico-Hinojosa ticket is a radical left-wing dream team, backed by the same globalist money and big-tech censorship that silenced conservatives for years. Their promises of "unity" ring hollow when their agenda includes open borders and job-killing regulations. Texans will soon see what happens when the party of endless giveaways takes power.
The lesson for Republicans is simple: listen to the people, cut spending, secure the border, and unleash American energy. If they don't, the blue tsunami of 2026 will look like a ripple compared to what's coming.
Patriots, the fight for Texas is far from over. Stay tuned.
