A Democrat chair of the House Immigration Subcommittee just stood before a cheering room and promised her first act will be prison for the men and women who chase traffickers—not the traffickers. Representative Pramila Jayapal, the Democrat from Washington's 7th District, told a crowd of her own party that ICE officers are "corrupt people" who "killed people in the streets," and then made the demand explicit: "We are going to send them to prison." That is not a metaphor. It is the opening demand of the Democrats' new immigration agenda, and it targets the badge, not the border.
The stake is the officer who makes the stop. Jayapal's subcommittee would put that officer in a cell, not the intoxicated illegal alien who killed 32-year-old Sergeant Brandon Mendoza on Mother's Day 2014. Sergeant Mendoza served 13 years on the Mesa police force and was hit head-on by a wrong-way driver who should never have been on the road—an illegal alien with prior arrests who was released instead of deported. The same agency Jayapal smears just honored Sergeant Mendoza. One party builds a memorial to that man while the other promises a cell to the officers who would have stopped his killer.
And if Jayapal's prison promise was the warning, Peggy Flanagan made it a mob chant. Minnesota's newly elected senator told her crowd, "We will rip ICE apart." That is incitement, not policy debate. The collision at the center of this fight runs straight through the Immigration Subcommittee. If Jayapal gets her way, the next officer may hesitate before making a stop, and that hesitation costs lives.
"Pramila Jayapal's first act with a gavel would be prison for the badge, while the other side waits for the Angel Families' 3 a.m. phone call to become a courtroom lecture."
Meanwhile, Border Czar Tom Homan is done waiting. He says the raid leakers are identified—and they won't keep their pensions. Leakers who tipped off criminal aliens before raids have gotten officers killed or compromised, and they thought they could hide behind anonymous bureaucracy. Homan is dragging them into the light, naming names and promising consequences. That is what the left fears most: actual accountability for sabotaging enforcement.
Every Republican on that subcommittee must now go on the record. Do you stand with Jayapal's prison fantasy, or with Mary Ann Mendoza standing over her son's grave? Tom Homan needs to finish the leak hunt. No quiet resignation, no lost pension as a warning. Find the leaker, fire them, prosecute them, and put them in the cell Pramila Jayapal reserved for the cops. That is the only answer that protects the next Brandon Mendoza—and the next mother who answers a 3 a.m. call.
