Minnesota Republican lawmakers have issued a blistering demand for Democrat Governor Tim Walz to resign, invoking the state constitution as they hold him accountable for an alleged fraud scandal that could drain up to $9 billion from hardworking taxpayers.
The GOP legislators argue that Walz has fundamentally failed in his constitutional obligation to faithfully execute Minnesota's laws, pointing to the massive Feeding Our Future fraud scheme that exploded under his administration's watch.
Constitutional Failure of Leadership
In their formal statement, Republican lawmakers cited the Minnesota Constitution's requirement that the governor "take care that the laws be faithfully executed" – a duty they say Walz has catastrophically abandoned.
"Governor Walz has demonstrated a complete dereliction of his constitutional responsibilities. The people of Minnesota deserve a leader who will protect their tax dollars, not allow billions to be stolen through fraud and incompetence," the lawmakers declared.
The Feeding Our Future scandal represents one of the largest pandemic-related fraud cases in American history. Federal prosecutors have alleged that criminals exploited COVID-19 relief programs meant to feed children, instead funneling the money into luxury cars, real estate, and other personal enrichment schemes.
Walz Administration Under Fire
Critics have long questioned why the Walz administration failed to implement proper oversight mechanisms that could have detected the fraud earlier. Despite repeated warnings from federal officials about potential abuse, the Minnesota Department of Education – which reports to Walz – continued approving payments.
