The radical left is consolidating power in Texas as Rep. Jasmine Crockett, one of the most extreme progressive voices in Congress, has surged to a commanding 12-point lead in the Democrat primary for U.S. Senate, according to a new University of Texas poll.
The survey from the Texas Politics Project shows Crockett leading state Rep. James Talarico by a substantial margin as Democrats prepare to challenge Republican incumbent John Cornyn in what could become one of the most watched Senate races of 2026.
For conservatives, this represents both an opportunity and a warning. On one hand, Crockett's far-left positions - including her vocal support for defunding police, backing the Green New Deal, and her inflammatory rhetoric against Trump supporters - could make her an easier target in a general election in traditionally red Texas.
The Squad Comes to Texas
Crockett has made a name for herself as one of the most combative Democrats in Congress, frequently launching personal attacks against Republicans and pushing radical progressive policies that are wildly out of step with Texas values. Her rise in the primary suggests the Democrat Party is moving even further left, abandoning any pretense of moderation.
"This is exactly what we expected from today's Democrat Party," said one Texas GOP strategist. "They're doubling down on the same failed policies that drove voters to Trump in 2024."
However, Republicans can't afford to get complacent. Crockett's strong showing demonstrates the left's ability to mobilize their base, particularly in urban areas like Houston, Dallas, and Austin. With demographic changes continuing across Texas, every Senate race becomes more competitive.
Cornyn's Challenge
Senator John Cornyn, while generally reliable on conservative issues, has occasionally drawn criticism from the MAGA base for not being sufficiently supportive of Trump's agenda. A Crockett nomination could actually help unite the Republican base behind Cornyn, as voters recognize the stark choice between conservative governance and radical leftist policies.
The question remains: will Texas Republicans take this threat seriously, or will overconfidence lead to another surprise like we've seen in other purple states? Patriots across the Lone Star State better start paying attention - because the left certainly is.
