House Speaker Mike Johnson is facing a conservative revolt after reports emerged that the Louisiana Republican plans to allow federal funding to resume flowing to Planned Parenthood when the current ban expires on July 4th.
According to the Washington Examiner, Johnson appears ready to abandon the fight to extend the Medicaid funding prohibition against America's largest abortion provider, despite Republicans controlling both chambers of Congress and the White House under President Trump's second term.
Pro-life organizations are sounding the alarm, with activists calling Johnson's position a "massive betrayal" of conservative voters who delivered Republicans their governing mandate specifically to defund the abortion giant.
"Defending the right to life is fundamental and something all Republicans should fight for," one pro-life advocate told reporters.
The controversy stems from Johnson's own legislative maneuvering last year. The Speaker successfully passed a two-year funding ban through the House, only to watch it get watered down to a mere one-year prohibition during budget reconciliation talks with Senate RINOs.
Now, with that compromise set to expire this summer, Johnson appears unwilling to wage the political battle necessary to extend the ban – despite having President Trump in the White House and stronger Republican majorities than when the original fight was won.
Where's the Fighting Spirit?
This raises serious questions about Republican leadership's commitment to core conservative principles. If the GOP won't defund Planned Parenthood with Trump back in office and full control of Congress, when exactly will they find the spine to fight?
Conservative base voters didn't deliver historic victories in 2024 so Republican leaders could fold on the most basic pro-life priorities. They expected fighters, not surrender merchants who cave at the first sign of Democrat opposition.
The clock is ticking toward July 4th – ironically Independence Day – when American taxpayers could once again be forced to subsidize an organization that terminates hundreds of thousands of pregnancies annually.
Will Speaker Johnson remember who put him in power and fight for life, or will he become just another establishment disappointment? Patriots are watching.
