House Republicans are moving to slam the brakes on a taxpayer-funded heist that has been running for years, unveiling a package of 14 bills aimed at Medicaid fraud after a new House Energy & Commerce Committee report found that federally subsidized healthcare programs are rife with abuse — and that Washington has no real handle on how much is being stolen.
The report, released Tuesday by the committee, warned that fraud in federal healthcare programs is "impacting every single American, in one way or another," according to Fox News. A 2024 Government Accountability Office estimate cited in the report put the government-wide losses to fraud at between $233 billion and $521 billion annually. Federal healthcare programs accounted for 24 percent of federal spending in 2024, per the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities.
"Taxpayers that fund benefit programs with federal and state taxpayer dollars are cheated by fraud, inflating healthcare costs that are passed along to everyone," the committee's report states. "Every dollar stolen from federal health care programs is a dollar that is not spent on high quality healthcare for those that need it most."
On Fox Business, Rep. Jodey Arrington, R-Texas, framed the scale of the problem in a way every American can understand: Medicare and Medicaid fraud is costing taxpayers roughly $1 million per minute, he said, citing GAO figures showing up to $500 billion in annual government-wide losses. Arrington made the comments in a joint op-ed discussion with Rep. Blake Moore, R-Utah.
Guthrie: The Biden-Harris Administration Left the Barn Door Open
House Energy & Commerce Committee Chairman Brett Guthrie, R-Ky., pointed the finger squarely at the previous administration. "The amount of fraud that the Biden-Harris Administration allowed to go unchecked in government health programs is unacceptable," Guthrie told Fox News Digital. "Every dollar stolen by fraudsters or wasted on improper payments is a dollar that cannot be used to support families in need who rely on these programs."
According to Fox News, the new GOP bills fall into three broad categories: improving identification of fraud in state and federal programs, shrinking bureaucracy, and giving states more tools to recoup lost dollars — including incentives to go after potential fraudsters. The report notes that Medicaid specifically is riddled with vulnerabilities that make it uniquely susceptible to fraud.
The push comes as the Trump-Vance administration's anti-fraud efforts are accelerating. Vice President JD Vance's task force has reported $260.7 billion in fraud uncovered since Trump took office and $72 billion in fraud stopped on an annualized basis, according to Fox News Digital.
OPM Uncovers Half a Billion More
The House committee's report isn't the only evidence that the swamp has been feasting on taxpayer dollars. The Office of Personnel Management has identified roughly $500 million in fraud, waste and abuse in the federal health benefits program, OPM Director Scott Kupor told Fox News Digital. Kupor said health insurance carriers in the Federal Employees Health Benefits and Postal Service Health Benefits programs reported preventing nearly $510 million in losses before or during payment, and recovered an additional $21.9 million after claims were paid.
"OPM runs health insurance for about 8.9 million retirees and federal employees, and we spend about $80 billion a year," Kupor told Fox News Digital. "The $500 million, a little more than half percent, is a good number, but certainly we have a long way to go here to root out more fraud, waste and abuse."
The agency is conducting its own review of health insurance claims data for the first time, analyzing billing patterns across providers and plans to flag unusual prescribing habits, surgery rates and other anomalies that can signal overuse, misuse or fraud — work that follows Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency push to apply artificial intelligence to federal recordkeeping at scale.
House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer, who has spent years exposing fraud and the Biden family's foreign business dealings, is winding down his role atop that panel, per Fox News.
The Daily Signal's Fred Lucas, reporting for WorldNetDaily on a related Senate report, noted the political blind spot: "You never hear socialists ranting about this unfair redistribution of wealth" — a reference to the fact that the biggest transfer of wealth in America isn't from rich to poor, but from taxpayers to scammers.
