The Social Security Administration announced Tuesday that it has corrected records for nearly 15% of all active Social Security numbers, adding missing death and citizenship data as part of the Trump administration's drive to curb benefits fraud. The agency called it the most comprehensive cleanup of the Social Security Number database in its 91-year history.

The corrections touched roughly 330 million U.S. citizens and nearly 390 million total records, according to figures the agency released Tuesday. SSA Commissioner Frank J. Bisignano cast the database as foundational to the federal government.

"The Social Security Number database is our country's books and records," Bisignano said in a statement. "The database's accuracy is essential to maintaining integrity of government services for citizens."

The agency said it added 17 million dates of death to records that previously lacked them, drawing on internal SSA systems and Department of State data. It updated about 25 million records with missing citizenship information using the Department of Homeland Security's Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements, or SAVE, service. Another 8.5 million records with inaccurate citizenship status are still being corrected, the commissioner said.

SSA added that it has put stronger internal controls in place to prevent manual-entry errors going forward.

Reuters, which first reported the figures Tuesday, noted that the agency administers benefits for tens of millions of older Americans and people with disabilities. Fox Business reported that since President Donald Trump took office in January 2025, the agency has corrected almost 15% of all active SSNs for U.S. citizens — nearly 50 million records out of 330 million.

"This is the first time SSA has undertaken an effort of this scale, and I am proud of the work we have done to strengthen the foundation of identity data relied upon throughout government and the economy," Bisignano said.

The cleanup follows the Department of Government Efficiency's move in March 2025 to mark roughly 3.2 million numberholders aged 120 and older as deceased. Earlier this year, the Treasury Department reported that it used Social Security records to stop payments totaling roughly $99 million that had been marked to be sent to dead people. The Treasury used the SSA's Full Death Master File to identify potentially ineligible recipients before payments were issued.

President Trump established a Task Force to Eliminate Fraud in March with Executive Order 14395. The order appointed Vice President JD Vance as chairman of the task force, which exists to "coordinate and accelerate a comprehensive national strategy to stop fraud, waste, and abuse within Federal benefit programs." Trump and Vance unveiled the Fraud Whistleblower Incentive Program during a Tuesday afternoon announcement.

Democrats have challenged the administration's handling of the death files. A former SSA employee told Congress the agency was pressured to assign death dates to living people, and Sens. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) and Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) wrote Bisignano demanding answers. SSA denied adding 2.7 million names to its Death Master File.

The agency says the initiative demonstrates a government-wide commitment to preventing fraud and protecting U.S. citizens' data. SSA records are used by federal agencies and states to verify identities and ensure that taxpayer-funded programs are properly administered.

Our Take

Fifty million records. That's not a rounding error — that's a bureaucracy that has been asleep at the switch for generations while billions of taxpayer dollars flowed out the door to people who shouldn't have received a dime. The fact that 17 million records were missing death dates and 25 million were missing citizenship information tells you everything you need to know about how seriously the federal government has taken its own books.

This is what happens when you put a businessman in charge instead of a career bureaucrat. Frank Bisignano and the Trump administration are doing what Democrats have talked about for decades but never lifted a finger to fix. The Left's response? Attack the messengers. Warren and Blumenthal want answers about death files while ignoring the elephant in the room: the system was broken long before Trump took office.

Patriots, this is your money. Every fraudulent check, every payment to a dead person, every benefit sent to someone who never should have been in the system is a dollar stolen from a deserving American. The cleanup is underway — and the people who let it rot for 91 years are suddenly demanding answers. Ask yourself why.

Finally someone is talking about this! My husband's earnings were wrong for three years and it took us 14 months of paperwork to fix it. This cleanup is long overdue.

Same here. Took my mom almost two years to correct her record. The bureaucracy is the problem.

50 million wrong records and they want us to trust them with even more of our money? This is exactly why we need more accountability at the SSA.

Question — does anyone know if we can check our own records online to make sure they're accurate before the cleanup? Would rather be proactive.

Do it soon, the hold times have been awful lately.

Yes, create an account on the SSA website. I checked mine last year and found a missing year of earnings.
