The House Ethics Committee on Monday launched an investigation into outgoing Congressman Madison Cawthorn following his recent loss in his Republican primary.
The investigation is focused on two particular incidents: Whether Rep Cawthorn had an inappropriate relationship with a staffer of his and whether his office had inappropriately promoted a cryptocurrency for the Congressman’s benefit.
The first of the two investigations arose from a video that was leaked during the election in which a male staffer of Cawthorn appeared to grab and play with his genitals while the congressman was driving.
Madison Cawthorn was also accused of running a pump-and-dump scheme with the cryptocurrency known as Let’s Go Brandon coin.
The exact statement from the committee about the charges read,
“Pursuant to the Committee’s action, the Investigative Subcommittee shall have jurisdiction to determine whether Representative Madison Cawthorn may have: improperly promoted a cryptocurrency in which he may have had an undisclosed financial interest, and engaged in an improper relationship with an individual employed on his congressional staff.”
Cawthorn was plagued by these as well as a series of arrests for speeding while driving on a suspended license and a video of him naked with another male in a hotel room that was released shortly before the election.
Despite his loss, Madison has remained defiant, posting on his Twitter,
“The time for gentile politics as usual has come to an end. It’s time for the rise of the new right, it’s time for Dark MAGA to truly take command. We have an enemy to defeat, but we will never be able to defeat them until we defeat the cowardly and weak members of our own party. Their days are numbered. We are coming.”
It seems clear from his statement that Rep Cawthorn has no intention of leaving politics quietly. Do you think he should run again in the next election? Should he retire entirely or take time off and make a comeback later?
