President Joe Biden poured cold water on an idea from far left Democrats to put abortion clinics on federal land in states where they are illegal.
The idea, originally proposed by socialist Democrats like Senator Elizabeth Warren, would have seen the federal government allow abortion clinics to be built out of tents on federal land. The goal was to skirt around laws outlawing abortion after the Supreme Court reversed Roe v Wade.
The proposal was brought up to the White House during a Wednesday interview with the WaPo when a reporter asked Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre if Biden would support that as a way to protect abortion access. Jean-Pierre quickly shot the notion down, calling it “dangerous”.
“We understand the proposal is well intentioned but here’s the thing, it could actually put women and providers at risk … And importantly in states where abortion is now illegal — women and providers who are not federal employees, as you look at the federal lands, could be potentially prosecuted … there’s actually dangerous ramifications to doing this,” said Jean-Pierre.
Vice President Kamala Harris was also approached with the idea when speaking to CNN’s Dana Bash. She also shot it down, instead suggesting it was an election issue.
“I mean, it’s not right now what we are discussing,” Harris said. “But I will say that, when I think about what is happening in terms of the states, we have to also recognize, Dana, that we are 130-odd days away from an election, which is going to include Senate races, right? Part of the issue here is that the court has acted. Now Congress needs to act. But we, if you count the votes, don’t appear to have the votes in the Senate.”
Joe Biden and his administration have no problem fear mongering over the end of Roe v Wade. Still, it looks like they have no intention of taking any meaningful actions that could resolve the issue before the November elections, even if it’s not using federal land. Do you think they really care at all or is it just politics as usual for them?
