On Tuesday, House Democrats announced their plans to write into law federal protections for transgender people.
The resolution, nicknamed the “Transgender Bill of Rights,” aims to codify the Supreme Court’s 2020 Bostock v. Clayton County decision. The precedent says that gay and transgender employees are protected from discrimination.
Rep. Pramila Jayapal led the push in the House and tweeted that she was “proud to stand with my colleagues to introduce a Trans Bill of Rights” in the House.
The Democrats’ new bill of rights is aimed at expanding the Civil Rights Act of 1964 to include protections for members of the LGBTQ+ community. It will also enshrine access to gender-reassignment procedures and ban conversion therapies.
The attorney general would also get the ability to designate a government liaison to oversee the civil rights of transgender people.
Rep. Pramila Jayapal touted the resolution as a great step forward in helping transgender people live “full, happy lives.”
“As we witness Republicans and an extremist Supreme Court attack and roll back the fundamental rights of trans people across our country, and as state legislatures across the country target our trans community with hateful, bigoted and transphobic attacks, we are standing up and saying enough is enough,” Jayapal said.
Reps. David Cicilline (D-R.I.), Marie Newman (D-Ill.), Mark Takano (D-Calif.) and Ritchie Torres (D-N.Y.) introduced the bill along with its 84 other Democrat co-sponsors.
Democrats are backed by over 30 organizations. Some of them are progressive stalwarts like the Human Rights Campaign, The National Education Association, and the National Center for Transgender Equality.
Americans of all stripes and colors are facing the worst economy in decades and this is what the Democrats are working on passing. It’s just a distraction. We need monetary relief, lower taxes, and interest rates that make it easier to buy homes again. Why do you think the Democrats are trying to push this now?
