A guest on MSNBC’s show Morning Joe defended former President Trump after the Left claimed that the mass shooter was one of his supporters.
Ben Collins, a senior reporter for NBC News, joined Joe Scarborough and Mika Brezneski on Tuesday to discuss the horrible mass shooting that took place during a 4th of July parade in Highland Park, Illinois.
The shooting, which killed 6 and wounded 20, was allegedly perpetrated by Robert E. Crimo, 22. The Left has claimed Crimo to have been an open supporter of President Trump’s MAGA movement because he was photographed dressed up as Waldo from “Where’s Waldo” while attending one of the former president’s rallies.
Despite the loose connection, Collins came to the defense of the former president, stressing that it was unfair to try and tie the shooter to Trump and his supporters in general.
“You can’t drill this down to one specific traditional political subculture. I know a lot of people want to point out that this guy was a Donald Trump fan. There were pictures of him draped in a Trump flag or outside of a Donald Trump motorcade. This is part of a much larger, deeper subculture that Donald Trump is in the past of,” the reporter stressed.
“This guy grew up as a child with Donald Trump as his president. He is trying to advance the accelerationism well past Donald Trump. This guy is part of a new wave of terror, and that’s something we have to get our brains around right now. This is not tied to one guy,” Ben Collins added.
While he did defend Trump on the issue, Collins was not as kind to the 2nd Amendment.
“The one thing that combines all these things is ready access to weapons. This guy had ready access to weapons,” he told MSNBC. “That’s the one thing. He had ready access to a machine that could kill a bunch of people in a short period of time.”
Regardless of the blame game, it’s undeniable that the Independence Day Massacre was a tragedy for Chicago and the country as a whole. What do you think we could do to help prevent another mass shooting like this from happening?
