A Democrat state Senator from Rhode Island posted a video this week of her twerking while upside down in an attempt to garner votes.
Senator Tiara Mack (D) posted the raunchy dance video to her TikTok account, hoping to use to publicity to get more potential voters on her side and round up some extra funding.
The video went viral on TikTok and then twitter, inciting criticism of how she was misrepresenting the Black community as a public figure by degrading herself with a twerking video.
Instead of letting it go, Senator Mack pushed back against her critics, trying to paint them all as “unhinged” conservative.
However, that almost immediately backfired when a liberal account called “Say it Loud – Black and Proud” weighed into the chat. The profile said they were “disappointed” in Mack, saying she failed to meet the “standard of decorum” that a Black politician should rise to by posting the video.
In possibly the strangest turn of events yet in this story, Mack pushed back again, this time telling the upset Twitter user that she can do it because she has an Ivy League degree and that “their decorum isn’t for us”.
She then used the same defense again on an entirely separate post after a Native American veterinarian said she did a “grave disservice” for struggling women. This time, however, Senator Mack add the peach emoji, which is used to mean “butt” in a sexual way.
Regardless of the criticism, the video was extremely popular online. It already began spawning memes of it’s own.
At this point it seems clear that Senator Tiara Mack will not back down on her video. Do you think it’s okay for a public figure to make videos like that to get votes or get a message out? Will this affect her ability to make it to a higher office?
