President Joe Biden revealed that he is now considering declaring a nationwide public health emergency over abortion access.
The President was out biking at his vacation home in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware when he stopped by a group of reporters over the weekend.
Biden revealed to the reporter pool that he is currently looking into “whether I have the authority” to declare the Supreme Court’s ruling that reversed Roe abortion protections a public health crisis.
If he was able to declare it a nationwide crisis, it would become conceivable that he could begin setting up makeshift abortion clinics on federal lands in states where abortion has been outlawed.
During the interview, President Biden was also asked about a recent incident where a group of pro-abortion protesters chased Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh out of the back of a high-end steakhouse in Washington, D.C.. Instead of condemning the incident, he told the group to “keep protesting”.
Biden added, “Keep making your point. It’s critically important. We can do a lot of things to accommodate the rights of women. In the meantime, fundamentally, the only way to change this is to have a national law that reinstates Roe v Wade.”
The sitting president’s sentiment was echoed by his outgoing Communications Director Kate Bedingfield. Bedingfield told the Washington Post in a statement over the weekend, “Joe Biden’s goal in responding to Dobbs is not to satisfy some activists who have been consistently out of step with the mainstream of the Democratic Party,” Bedingfield said.
“It’s to deliver help to women who are in danger and assemble a broad-based coalition to defend a woman’s right to choose now, just as he assembled such a coalition to win during the 2020 campaign,” she added.
It had been suggested by the most liberal Democrats like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Senator Elizabeth Warren that Biden should use a Public Health Emergency to open up abortion clinics in tents on federal lands to push back against abortion bans. Initially he rejected these ideas outright, but his new statement suggests he is now considering it. Do you think he will forcibly open these clinics in conservative states if he declares the ban?
