On Thursday, President Biden’s physician Kevin O’Connor announced they had stopped the president from taking his heart medications while he takes Paxlovid for 5-days to combat his viral infection. The New York Post reported that this could lead to an increased risk of “dangerous blood clots.”
According to White House coronavirus coordinator Dr. Ashish Jha, it’s “standard” to stop taking other medications while taking Pfizer’s anti-viral medicine. Biden will be on Paxlovid for 5 days. He also stressed that the president “sounded great” when he talked to him.

“It’s a very standard, common thing that we do when we give people Paxlovid,” Jha said. “You don’t need to do anything in those circumstances. They both get stopped for the five days that he’s on Paxlovid and then they get restarted and it’s totally fine and pretty normal practice.”
According to the Food and Drug Administration, “premature discontinuation of any oral anticoagulant, including Eliquis, increases the risk of thrombotic events.” This means that he is at an elevated risk of blood clots while off the medications.
On Thursday, President Joe Biden tested positive for the virus. This comes a day after a speech he gave after returning from Saudi Arabia where he had a gaffe in which he said he had cancer – which could be attributed to brain fog from the disease.
“That’s why I grew up and so damn many other people I grew up with had cancer,” said Biden.
The White House later clarified that he was talking about skin cancer removals he had before his presidency.
Biden is 79 and the oldest American President in history. Due to his age, he has an increased risk of severe illness and death from the virus. To date, he has gotten four shots of Pfizer’s jab. This reduces the risk of him having a serious reaction. He is currently isolating himself in the White House.
