D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser requested that the Department of Defense call in the the D.C. National Guard to help deal with the migrants that are being bused in from Republican states by Texas and Arizona. This is after calling the nation’s capitol a “sanctuary city” to make a political point.
There are not enough resources available in the city to handle the almost 4,000 migrants that have arrived. She called it a “humanitarian crisis” and a “tipping point.” Republican Texas Gov. Greg Abbott started sending the migrants to sanctuary cities in April of this year. The number of illegal immigrants was confirmed by the mayor’s office in a statement to Fox 5.
Bowser called for the the National Guard in a letter sent to Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin on July 19 and then a separate letter to the White House three days later.
“The migrant crisis facing our city and our country through cruel political gamesmanship from the Governors of Texas and Arizona must be dealt with at the federal level,” her message said.
According to News4 Washington, the Department of Defense confirmed that they received the letter but they cannot respond on whether it will respond to the Mayor’s request.
“The Secretary takes this request for assistance very seriously. He and his team are working through the details, and will respond to the mayor’s office as soon as a decision has been reached,” a DOD spokesperson said.
Bowser is now demanding the DC National Guard should man the DC Armory and process the thousands of illegal immigrants that are overwhelming the city there.

On Thursday, Bowser implored the fed for assistance, “We need space, and we need the federal government to be involved, so I’ve asked for a deployment of the guard as long as we need the guard to deal with a humanitarian crisis that we expect to escalate. The number of people crossing the border seeking asylum we expect to only go up.”
