Noem, 50, is considered a potential candidate for the Republican presidential nomination in 2024. Democrat Jamie Smith will face her in November, according to the Sioux Falls Argus-Leader.
A South Dakota State News release quoted Noem as saying, “I need to restrict my activities to allow my back to heal properly. My ability to stand and travel around our great state will be limited in the short term.”
According to her surgeon, Dr. Mohamad Bydon, Noem developed an acute condition affecting her spine. Her surgery was successful and she is on her way to a full recovery. The Governor is in excellent health.” He said
In keeping with her word, Noem on Monday joined other governors in criticizing President Biden’s proposed plan to forgive part of college student loans, according to KELO-TV.
According to Biden’s plan, many students could forgive up to $10,000, and Pell grant recipients could forgive up to $20,000.
The letter Noem joined in signing read, “College may not be the right decision for every American, but for the students who took out the loans, it was their decisions: able adults and willing borrowers who knowingly agreed to the terms of the loan and consented to taking on debt in exchange for taking classes,” the letter said. “A high-cost degree is not the key to unlocking the American Dream — hard work and personal responsibility is.”
Health issues that require surgery like this are no small deal. Noem is doing the right thing by limiting her travel to allow herself to fully recover. With that being said, its commendable to see her still hard at work serving her constituents in the capacity she can. We are praying for her speedy recovery.
