According to new legislation signed by California Governor Gavin Newsom last week, grocery stores will be required by 2025 to eliminate plastic bags used to store fruits and vegetables.

The Daily Wire reports that stores will only be allowed to give out compostable or recycled paper pre-checkout bags under SB 1046.

With this action, the state becomes the first in the country to get rid of such bags over time, potentially setting the stage for other states to follow suit. By January 1, 2025, stores must comply with the new law

The new law follows California’s ban on single-use plastic bags at check-out lanes at stores in 2016, according to FOX News. That law has since been followed by other states, such as New Jersey and New York.
