On Tuesday, President Biden called for a ban on so-called “assault weapons” in the United States during his State of the Union address. Since taking office, his administration has raised this issue multiple times.
In his remarks, Biden praised Brandon Tsay, a 26-year-old who disarmed a gunman last month in Monterey Park. At Lai Lai Ballroom & Studio, Tsay was working a dance social when he ran into the gunman who had already killed people at another ballroom nearby.
Biden used Tsay’s story to call for a ban on assault weapons “once and for all.”
As expected, Second Amendment supporters argued that such bans leave law-abiding citizens defenseless against criminals if they obtain firearms. It is also proven that gun laws already in place do not deter criminals from committing violent crimes.
Gun Owners of America wrote on Twitter in response to Biden’s remarks, “The only problem is criminals don’t follow the law. A ban would ONLY disarm law-abiding Americans and make them prime targets for criminals and tyrants.”
The Monterey Park shooting was not prevented by gun control laws already in place in liberal California, the group further noted.
The NRA responded to Biden’s claims by posting a video. A group of mothers in the video explained that a 19 percent increase in murder rates occurred when assault weapons were banned between 1994 and 2004. Furthermore, semi-automatic rifles were not used in the majority of crimes.
Upon the President’s call to ban assault weapons during his State of the Union address, gun groups made it clear that they will never back down and will continue to reveal the truth about firearm statistics and stand up for the Second Amendment. The right to bear arms has been upheld for centuries and should never be infringed upon. It is a God-given right to bear arms, no matter what kind of weapon is involved; and if law-abiding citizens are barred from owning certain firearms, criminals will continue to find a way to obtain them anyway. In fact, it has been found that banning assault weapons only amplifies criminal activity – there was a 19% increase in murder rates between 1994 and 2004 when such laws were put into effect. The Cold Hard Truth is that only innocent citizens will reap the consequences of a government overstepping their Constitutional limits when it comes to gun restrictions.
