During a recent meeting, one Democrat Miami City commissioner left citizens of the community reeling when she failed to recite the Pledge of Allegiance on command. Faced with reciting the Pledge – something that is embedded in our minds since childhood – this elected official responded with silence, leaving many stunned and worried about what it says about her values and patriotism.
In her first meeting as a Miami city commissioner, a Democrat forgot the Pledge of Allegiance.
FOX News reports, the Miami City District 2 commissioner, Sabina Covo, went blank-faced during the March 9 meeting after being asked to recite the pledge following her special election on Feb. 27.
Covo was rescued by the attendees and the chairwoman of the commission after several seconds of silence.
As a result of the video’s popularity on social media, Covo issued a statement stating that she was nervous.
Her statement read in part, “When you feel a responsibility is that important, nervousness is very normal, and I’m not afraid to admit that I was. The oath and pledge I took to our nation and to the residents of District 2 is clear and I am focused on honoring my promise to get things done for our community.”
The Florida GOP responded to the video of Covo on Twitter, writing, “Just when you thought you’ve seen it all… Florida Democrat Sabina Covo doesn’t know the Pledge of Allegiance. Alarming.”
Covo, 43, born in Medellin, Colombia, won her election with 1,861 votes, or 30% of the vote, according to Florida Politics. As well as reporting for television, she has been a journalist for decades.
Nikki Fried, who lost her bid for governor in the Democratic primary, endorsed Covo.
The shameful sight we saw recently of Covo’s silence when asked to recite the Pledge of Allegiance is an alarming one that provides a very telling picture. As she was unable to speak the words that are so embedded in our minds from childhood speaks louder than her silence and it can only leave one to wonder what exactly this elected official’s values and patriotism are. Unfortunately there is no way to answer these questions other than by watching how she conducts herself going forward.
