In yet another horrifying example of political violence, a staffer for Kentucky Senator Rand Paul was brutally attacked on the streets of Washington, D.C. The attacker left the staffer with life-threatening injuries, prompting an immediate response from law enforcement officials. As the investigation continues, it’s becoming increasingly clear that political tensions in America are reaching a boiling point. Conservative voices across the country are expressing their concern for the safety of not just political leaders, but also everyday citizens who dare to express their beliefs. It’s time for all Americans to come together and reject violence as a means of political expression.
Rand Paul’s office confirmed Monday that a member of his staff was “brutally attacked” over the weekend in Washington, D.C.
The Kentucky Senator released a statement that read: “This past weekend a member of my staff was brutally attacked in broad daylight in Washington, D.C. I ask you to join Kelley and me in praying for a speedy and complete recovery, and thanking the first responders, hospital staff, and police for their diligent actions. We are relieved to hear the suspect has been arrested. At this time we would ask for privacy so everyone can focus on healing and recovery”
According to a press release issued by the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Police Department on Monday afternoon, the victim suffered “life-threatening injuries” in the attack. Paul’s office has not confirmed the identity of the victim.
The 42-year-old suspect, Glynn Neal, was arrested on suspicion of an Assault with Intent to Kill (Knife) offense, and the incident occurred near the Capitol, on the 1300 block of H Street, NE.
In 2017, Senator Paul himself was attacked by a neighbor and sustained serious injuries. Six of his ribs were broken, including three displaced fractures, and he suffered recurrent pneumonia and fluid around his lungs during recovery.
Following Donald Trump’s 2020 Republican National Convention acceptance speech at the White House, Paul and his wife were also attacked by a mob as they returned to their hotel. At the time, one man was charged with assaulting a police officer near Paul, but the charges were later dropped.
Washington, D.C. has experienced an increase in crime, including murders. Last year, D.C. hit 200 murders in consecutive years for the first time since 2003.
The attack on Senator Rand Paul’s staffer should serve as a wake-up call to all Americans about the dangers of political violence. Whether it’s physical attacks on individuals or the destruction of property, this type of behavior must be condemned in the strongest terms possible. Unfortunately, many individuals and groups on the left have used violence as a tool to try and silence conservative voices. This must end now. We call on all Americans, regardless of political affiliation, to reject violence and embrace civil discourse. The future of our great nation depends on it.
