A Tuesday hearing got heated as usual where Republican Missouri Sen. Josh Hawley grilled yet again DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas on the border crisis. The senator accused Mayorkas of facilitating trafficking among the many other things he’s letting flood into our country.
The crisis at the border is causing chaos, with a wave of unaccompanied migrant minors pouring into the country. While many were understandably concerned about the welfare of these minors, Republican Missouri Sen. Josh Hawley is raising red flags about their being trafficked and used as forced labor. And even more deserving, DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas is being accused of facilitating this modern-day indentured servitude.
Sen. Hawley accused Mayorkas of allowing thousands of unaccompanied migrant minors to come across the border illegally and pressuring agencies to skip the vetting process for the children as a political move.
A report from The New York Times was read, which stated that Mayorkas “began loosening vetting restrictions” to quicken the process. This means that the children are now at risk of being exploited and trafficked by individuals with malicious intentions.
Let’s first HEAR how the children are being exploited
In his words to Mayorkas, Hawley said, “You have at every stage facilitated this modern day indentured servitude of minor children. Why should you not be impeached for this?”
The DHS secretary rebutted, “Senator, I look forward to discussing this issue further because you are misstating the facts so terribly.”
Then senator Hawley Exploded on him
Due to the Trump administration’s zero tolerance policy on illegal immigration, thousands of migrant children were separated from their parents. The National Immigration and Justice Center reported in 2022 that the Biden administration also separated families through detention and deportation following its interior immigration enforcement practices.
The allegations against DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas are concerning and require immediate attention. Sen. Hawley’s grilling at the Tuesday hearing highlighted the appalling situation of minors trafficked and used as forced labor. It’s time for the current administration to take responsibility for their lack of action on the border crisis. Otherwise, these injustices will continue on our soil. That’s assuming the Biden Administration cares.
