As President Biden begins to navigate through his 2024 re-election campaign, some Republicans are raising concerns about his cognitive state. A group of over 60 Republicans has called on Biden to take a cognitive test or withdraw from the race. Despite the two physical exams Biden underwent during his presidency, the lawmakers argue that there is no indication he has had a cognitive assessment. They claim that Biden’s frequent gaffes and stumbles have become a common occurrence.
Texas GOP Representative Ronny Jackson, along with 61 fellow Republicans, have expressed concerns over President Joe Biden’s cognitive abilities and expressed the need for him to either undergo a cognitive exam or withdraw from the upcoming 2024 presidential race. Jackson, formerly the White House doctor, and the Republicans wrote to President Biden, stating that they “believe that, regardless of gender, age, or political party, all Presidents should document and demonstrate sound mental abilities.”
The Republicans wrote in their letter that while President Biden has undergone two physical exams since taking office, there is no indication that he has undergone any cognitive assessment or whether the results of such an assessment were concealed from the public.
Following Biden’s most recent physical in February, the White House physician, Kevin O’Connor, stated that the President is “a healthy, vigorous, 80-year-old male, who is fit successfully to execute the duties of the Presidency, to include those as Chief Executive, Head of State, and Commander in Chief.” However, the Republicans noted that this statement was based only on a physical exam that did not include an evaluation of President Biden’s cognitive and mental abilities, which they say is where their concerns, and those of the American public, lie.
The Republicans also pointed out that President Biden and his staff have dismissed three prior letters requesting the President to submit to a cognitive exam from Congress. They argue that the American people have lost faith in the President’s ability to lead the country due to his apparent mental decline, forgetfulness, and numerous public incidents where he shuffles his feet, slurs his words, forgets names, loses his train of thought, or appears momentarily confused.
Regarding the issue of national security, the Republicans highlighted the need for a cognitively sound Commander in Chief. They argued that the American people deserve complete transparency on the President’s mental capabilities, and called on him to either renounce his bid for re-election or undergo a clinically validated cognitive screening assessment and make the results available to the public. The Republicans noted that successful completion of such an exam would ease the minds of the concerned American public and prove that President Biden is capable of executing the duties required of the President of the United States.
The Republicans further argued that failure of such a test would allow President Biden “to come to terms with the many failures of his administration over the past two years and allow a mentally fit leader to emerge.” They called for the President to prioritize the welfare of the American people and the country’s national security, emphasizing that concerned citizens need to have absolute confidence in their President’s ability to perform his duties as Head of State and Commander in Chief.
And, on Twitter, Rep. Jackson added, “Joe Biden refusing to take a cognitive exam should trouble EVERY American. It’s DANGEROUS. We’re on the cusp of multiple geopolitical catastrophes, and we DESERVE to know if our “leader” is up for the job. Americans will DIE if he isn’t. TAKE THE TEST!”
The American people deserve a president who is mentally fit to lead this great nation. President Biden’s continued refusal to take a cognitive test only fuels doubts about his ability to carry out the duties of Commander in Chief. With over 14 million online search results for “Biden gaffes,” it is clear that the American people are not alone in their concerns. As Republicans, we call on President Biden to either renounce his bid for reelection or submit to a cognitive screening assessment to prove his mental fitness. Our national security depends on it, and the American people demand nothing less than absolute transparency from their elected officials.
