Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL) has introduced a resolution seeking to censure and impose a hefty fine of $16 million against Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) for his repeated lies and abuse of trust regarding alleged collusion between Russia and former President Donald Trump. Schiff’s egregious behavior has not only misled the American people but also harmed national security. Luna’s resolution has been fast-tracked for consideration and is expected to be voted on Thursday morning. Luna has also pushed for Schiff’s expulsion from Congress, but this effort has not yet succeeded.
Schiff’s dishonesty has been a thorn in the side of Republicans, who have repeatedly accused him of being a liar. As the former chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, Schiff insisted that there was evidence of collusion between the Russian government and Trump’s 2016 campaign. The Mueller inquiry found no evidence of criminal conspiracy, but Schiff continued to spread falsehoods about the Russia matter. This behavior has led to widespread GOP frustration with Schiff. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) even kicked him off the intelligence panel earlier this year after Republicans took control of the House.
Luna’s resolution seeks to have the House formally censure and condemn Schiff for his egregious abuse of trust and to fine him $16 million. This amount is roughly half the cost of special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian election interference. The resolution also calls for an investigation by the House Ethics Committee, and pending its findings, Schiff should be fined for lying and abusing sensitive information. Luna has called upon House leadership to back up her motion and hold Schiff accountable for his actions.
House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-LA) has expressed support for Luna’s measure and is working with her to find the best timing to bring it to the House floor to ensure its passage. A procedural vote on the censure resolution is likely to occur on Wednesday. Schiff, who is now running for the Senate seat held by Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA), has responded defiantly and has made clear his intention to continue his smear campaign against President Trump. However, Schiff’s dishonest behavior has put national security at risk and cannot be tolerated. Luna’s resolution sends a strong message that such abuses of trust and power will not be condoned in Congress, and those who engage in such behavior will be held accountable.
