Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson, a Democrat, is once again demonstrating his disregard for the law and the American people by proposing to use $25 million in taxpayer money to pay rent for illegal aliens. This move comes as residents of Chicago are struggling with exorbitant rent prices, which have surged in recent years.
The mayor seems to have forgotten that his primary responsibility is to serve the needs of legal residents, not those who have broken the law by illegally crossing the border into our country. Despite this, Johnson is offering to provide six months of rent to over 6,500 illegal aliens using money that should be going towards improving the lives of law-abiding citizens.
To make matters worse, the mayor is also planning to place over 300 mostly single male border crossers and illegal aliens in a sports center in the Gage Park neighborhood of Chicago, further burdening the residents of the area.
As research has shown, the admission of over one million legal immigrants and millions of illegal aliens into the country every year raises housing and rental prices for middle and working class Americans. This is no different in Chicago, where rents have skyrocketed and residents are struggling to keep up.
Left-wing publications such as New York Magazine have even admitted that mass immigration is “bad for housing prices,” yet Mayor Johnson seems to be oblivious to this fact. Instead, he is promoting the importing of tens of millions of illegal and legal immigrants, which has already raised housing costs by $3.7 trillion for the next generation of homebuyers.
Despite claims by the Michael Bloomberg-funded New American Economy that this mass immigration has created “housing wealth,” the reality is that it is a burden on hardworking Americans who are paying the price for the mayor’s misguided policies.
It is time for Mayor Johnson to start prioritizing the needs of American citizens over those who have broken the law and entered the country illegally. Rather than wasting taxpayer money on rent for illegal aliens, he should be focusing on improving the lives of legal residents who are struggling to make ends meet.
