Canada, our neighbors to the north, has instituted a nationwide freeze on handguns at the same time that President Joe Biden is hinting at similar actions.
The announcement was made by liberal Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau who has long campaigned on heavier gun control for the country.
“Last summer, during the campaign, some politicians said they would make assault style weapons legal again,” he began.
Trudeau then talked about his campaign promise to offer funding to Canadian provinces who restricted handgun ownership themselves, “Not only did we stand up to them, but we promised to go even further to protect our communities. We proposed to invest to help provinces and territories put restrictions on handguns within their jurisdictions.”
Then the Canadian Prime Minister announced his true intention to force a national freeze on handguns whether the provinces wanted them or not. “However, in our discussions with law enforcement advocates and experts, it became apparent that we needed a different solution. We’re introducing legislation to implement a national freeze on handgun ownership.”
He went on to explain that “freeze on ownership” means that it will become illegal for Canadians to “buy, sell, transfer or import handguns anywhere in Canada.” Trudeau proudly declared, “In other words, we’re capping the market for handguns.”
Coincidentally on the exact same day that Trudeau announced his ban, President Biden made a hauntingly similar statement during a Memorial Day speech.
“They said a .22-caliber bullet will lodge in the lung, and we can probably get it out — may be able to get it and save the life. A 9mm bullet blows the lung out of the body,” Biden proclaimed. “So, the idea of these high-caliber weapons is, uh, there’s simply no rational basis for it in terms of self-protection, hunting. Remember, the constitution was never absolute.”
Vice President Kamala Harris also spoke about seeking a ban on “assault weapons” over the weekend while heading to a memorial in Buffalo, New York.
The Democrats have been very open about their desire to seek bans on various weapons and, ultimately, guns in general. Do you think they will eventually win this fight at the rate they are going? What do you believe they will ban next?
