Florida Governor Ron DeSantis lead former President Donald Trump in a straw poll at the Wisconsin GOP convention. The poll takes into account the opinions of 325 Wisconsin Republican activists and took place on Saturday.
The poll shows that there might be some Trump fatigue happening. The former President only saw 43% of Republicans wanting another Trump campaign to happen again.
A UFC political scientist says that DeSantis is beating Trump at his own game.
Straw polls aren’t always the best indicator of actual voting results but it does show that the Florida Republican Governor is a rising star in the GOP.
The poll was conducted on WisPolitics.com over the weekend and DeSantis and Trump pulled ahead of all the prospective candidates.
DeSantis took 38% of the vote and Trump got 32% of the vote. Nikki Haley took 7%. Former Vice President Mike Pence, Senator Ted Cruz, and Rand Paul all had 2.5% respectively.
Florida typically has very close statewide elections, but DeSantis is extremely popular in the state as indicated by recent polling.
For example in 2018, DeSantis beat Democrat candidate Andrew Gillum by only 40,000 votes (or .4%) in an election that had 8.2 million votes cast.
In June 2021, Wisconsin passed a bill that would make the state a “Second Amendment sanctuary” in a shot across the bow of the state’s democrat legislature. The law was vetoed by Democrat Governor Tony Evers.
If the bill had been signed into law, it would ” prevent Wisconsin law enforcement officials from confiscating guns from those convicted of a misdemeanor domestic violence offenses.”

During Trump’s first run for President in 2016, Wisconsin voted for him in the first time that a Republican had won the state’s elector votes. He won 22,000 more votes than Hillary Clinton in the state in one of the lowest turn out elections since 1966.
A poll conducted in May by CWS Research shows that Trump would only command 45% of support with Republicans while DeSantis came in 28%, which is an 8% rise from previous polling done in April.
In most polls where Trump is not a candidate DeSantis usually sweeps the polls by large margins.
