President Joe Biden made the wild accusation on Wednesday that both Republicans and Democrats are equally to blame for progressive policies that have led to a recent crime wave.
Biden was leaving for the Summit of Americas in Los Angeles when he was asked about last night’s recall of San Francisco’s progressive DA Chesa Boudin. Boudin had been recalled after his soft-on-crime policies including prosecution and bail reform were blamed for a spike in crime in his city.
Biden told the reporters that “both parties” needed to do better to cut crime and support police officers, ignoring the fact that many of the policies to blame are pushed exclusively by Democrats. “The voters sent a clear message last night. Both parties have to step up and do something about crime as well as gun violence,” he said.
He went on to brag about his own efforts to refund the police departments with federal funding after Democrat-led Defund the Police movements left many of them struggling for resources.
“The first major bill we passed … we gave the states and localities billions of dollars, billions of dollars and then encouraged them to use it to hire police officers and reform the police department,” Biden bragged before adding, “Very few have done it.”
Biden, who has often bucked the more radical leg of his party in supporting police officers despite criticism from fellow Democrats, said he wants police to hurry up and spend the money to rebuild and retrain their forces.
“It’s time they move. It’s time states and the localities spend the money they have to deal with crime, as well as retrain police officers, as well as provide for more community policing.”
Meanwhile, the once Democrat paradise of California has begun to reject their own policies. A recent poll from the University of Berkeley showed that crime is the number one concern of Californians going into this year’s elections. The results of that poll were reflected when Boudin was recalled, having lost the confidence of over 60% of the city’s voters.
Just a few hours south of San Francisco in Los Angeles, another progressive DA named George Gascon is facing his own recall. With the movement having almost achieved the signatures necessary to force the vote, the removal of Boudin could bode poorly for Gascon’s own future.
Despite Joe Biden’s attempt to deflect the blame equally between parties, it is pretty clear that these particular crimes are happening in heavily Democrat lead areas of the country. Do you think his words will be enough to trick voters into ignoring that or have they already caught on?
