John Kerry On Supply Chain Crisis: “We Need to Spur the Transition to Green Shipping”

On Tuesday, President Joe Biden’s Climate Envoy John Kerry spoke at a United Nation’s Ocean Conference in Lisbon, Portugal and called for green shipping.

He also discussed the U.S.’s membership in the Global Alliance against Acidification.

“The ocean is a source of climate solutions and they can help keep the 1.5 degrees target alive,” Kerry said. “We need to spur the transition to green shipping. If shipping were a nation, shipping would be the eighth largest emitter in the world.”

Kerry said, Maersk, the world’s largest shipping company, “has already promised that the next eight ships it builds will be ‘carbon-free’ and if Maersk can do it, everyone can do it.”

According to Advanced Polymer Coatings, the shipping industry consumes more than 300 million tons of fuel yearly. The International Maritime Organization is asking ships to cut their greenhouse-gas emissions by 2050.

“The environment and climate don’t suddenly stop because of an invasion. Lives are at stake, and our ocean touches every single aspect of our lives, from the air we breathe to the food we eat,” Kerry said discussing Russia.

Kerry negatively mentioned Japan’s fishing industry, he said, “We must stop the practice of reckless, illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing. We have zero prayer of achieving SDG 14 as long as entire fleets of vessels continue to operate with impunity. One country alone has thousands of vessels knowingly fishing illegally.”

“All of us have seen the pictures of conglomerated garbage in the Pacific Ocean, and yet the problem is only increasing. Human beings actually ingest microplastics at the level of about one credit card per week without knowing it on a global basis. The UN mandate that was just decided and UNEA-5.2 to launch multilateral negotiations on global and legally binding agreement is more than welcome. It must translate into plastic reduction,” said Kerry

Kerry turned up the rhetoric and called for the United Nations to take “immediate action.” He mentioned that “every tenth of a degree [of global temperature rise] has a vast, trillion-dollar cost.”

“If we don’t respond, all this will be nothing but rhetoric. All these meetings will condemn us to the dustbin of history,” he continued.

Kerry would also told the conference to increase offshore wind and solar installations as a solution to going green.

Kerry is so tone deaf. He likely flew there in his private jet. He has the gall to ask to make shipping more expensive at a time when Americans are facing higher prices everywhere they turn. How would you describe John Kerry in one word?
