US To Acquire 800,000 More Monkeypox Vaccines

Recently the Director-General of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, declared that monkeypox is now a public health emergency of international concern. Mind you, the majority of the committee did not agree with him, but he gets to make the final decision. The U.S. is getting prepared, just in case.

The United States is on track to receive 800,000 doses of the monkeypox vaccine. The government has been criticized for taking too long to get more vaccines, for fear that the infectious disease would be entrenched by the time it got here. Dr. Perry Halkitis, a public health specialist at Rutgers University said “I think with some quicker action on the part of federal government we might not be in the situation we are now.”

The Food and Drug Administration tweeted about the status of the vaccines on Wednesday: “Given the emerging public health need, FDA previously facilitated the shipment of manufactured doses to the U.S. so that they would be ready to be distributed once the manufacturing changes were approved.”

There were more than 4,600 reported monkeypox cases in the U.S. as of late Wednesday, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.  The primary places that need more vaccines are San Francisco and New York City. The U.S. government has sent over 310,000 doses of the two-shot vaccine out to state and local health departments, but the 800,000 additional doses will be welcome in the cities that have the worst infection rates.

While anyone can catch monkeypox, and there have been reports of children who have contracted it in the United States, it is currently primarily found in men who have sex with men. Symptoms are fever, body aches, chills and fatigue, as well as “zit-like bumps on many parts of the body.”

One would think the Biden administration would have learned with covid-19 that they have to be on top of these infectious diseases and be ready with what’s necessary to prevent further spread. Anyone who thought that would be wrong. Biden is not prepared to keep this country safe, from disease or economic ruin. Are you worried about contracting monkeypox?
