The mayor of a border town said Wednesday that the influx of illegal migrants is not an invasion, but a humanitarian crisis.

This week, Abbott asserted state powers to increase border security and return illegal immigrants to Mexico. Texas can use the declaration to build a border wall, return migrants to Mexico, and designate Mexican cartels as foreign terrorist groups.
As a result of the influx of migrants, Joel Villarreal said mayors are partnering with the federal government in order to “manage” the situation. Neither party has passed comprehensive immigration reform and communicated with state and local officials, he said.
In addition, the mayor said the cartels “exploit our broken immigration system” in order to make money. Mexico and the U.S. should work together to manage immigration flows in a “mutual partnership,” he said.
It has been reported that Mexican officials are doing little to stop illegal immigration by allowing migrants to cross the border into the U.S. rather than controlling the mass migration. In order to increase security along the Mexican border, Abbott met with Mexican officials.
An Ipsos/NPR poll conducted in August found that 54% of Americans believe there is an invasion on the southern border. More than half of those surveyed believe migrants are responsible for increasing drug deaths due to the large quantities of fentanyl they carry.
It’s clear that Americans believe there is an invasion on the southern border. The border crisis needs to be solved right now. We don’t need the situation sugar coated – we need answers and facts. In order to get a handle on the current immigration situation, we need to build the wall and secure our border. Deportations need to happen for those who are here illegally. And we need to stop the drugs from coming across our borders. Legal immigration is not the problem. The problem is illegal immigration. And that’s what we need to focus on if we’re going to get this situation under control.
