Christmas has come early this year for everyone who has ever chanted “CNN Sucks” at a Trump rally. However this is not a gift that will be well received by the thousands of activist employees who turned CNN into the dumpster fire of the network it is today.
In a move reminiscent of Ebenezer Scrooge, before he had a change of heart, the new CEO of CNN, Christ Licht has dropped a bomb on CNN staffers just ahead of the Christmas season.
If you recall this was all predicted by Ted Kopel to a dismissive Brian Stelter back in 2018. Who told the now unemployed Stelter, “You can’t do without Donald Trump. You would be lost without Donald Trump.”
Now Brian Stelter is no more and CNN is firing employees in droves.
Hollywood Reporter reports, CNN will lay off workers Wednesday and Thursday as part of the company’s continued cost-cutting efforts, which are designed to integrate legacy Warner Media companies (like CNN) with Discovery companies.
The CNN CEO said in a memo on Wednesday that paid contributors would be informed of their status on Wednesday as part of a new reporting strategy, while full-time employees would be notified on Thursday.
Licht wrote, “It will be a difficult time for everyone.”
CNN’s Oliver Darcy, whom many would like to see on the “pink slip list” Tweeted the announcement.
“CNN boss Chris Licht informs employees in an all-staff note that layoffs are underway. Licht says those being notified today are largely paid contributors and then tomorrow CNN “will notify impacted employees. Licht will then provide an update to staff afterward.”
He attached the Licht memo.
He followed up that tweet, “Hundreds of CNN staffers are expected to be impacted by the layoffs in what will mark the deepest cuts to the news network in years.”
Darcy noted in his linked article that, “Employees at the company had been anxiously bracing for the layoffs since Licht informed them last month that “unsettling” changes lie ahead.”
Then reported the exact number of affected employees was unknown, writing, “CNN declined to say on Wednesday how many employees precisely would be impacted by the layoffs.”
But the anxiety at CNN has been rising for weeks since rumors began to tear through the halls of the network.
Licht warned employees in late October that the news division would undergo a restructuring, citing “widespread concern over the global economic outlook.”
A point Darcy noted writing, “The layoffs come as media companies are being battered by brutal economic headwinds that have taken a bat to the advertising sector.”
In the aftermath of the merger, CNN+ streaming service was shut down, laying off a couple hundred workers.
CNN Digital has also made cuts since then, and a few high-profile anchors and correspondents have left the network, including Brian Stelter and John Harwood. Additionally, it has begun adding new programming, including a morning show hosted by Don Lemon, Poppy Harlow, and Kaitlan Collins.
