Oh, how the tables have turned.
According to The Washington Post, Republican members of Congress gained tens of thousands of Twitter followers during Elon Musk’s reign over the social network while their Democratic counterparts experienced a decline.
During the first three weeks of Musk’s ownership of Twitter, Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), Rep. Adam B. Schiff (D-Calif.) and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) lost about 100,000 Twitter followers each, whereas Republican Reps Marjorie Taylor Greene (Ga.) and Jim Jordan (Ohio) each gained more than 300,000.
There was an average gain of 8,000 followers for Republicans and 4,000 followers for Democrats.
As noted by The Western Journal, Republican followers have increased while Democratic followers have decreased after Musk made significant changes to the social media platform over the past few weeks.
A number of banned accounts have been reactivated, including those of former President Donald Trump, clinical psychologist Jordan Peterson, and entertainer Kanye West.
Then, Musk announced in a Twitter post that there would be general amnesty across the entire platform based on a poll he had posted.
Twitter has been in the news a lot lately, and for mostly positive reasons. After all, the social media platform has come under new ownership, and that new owner is none other than Elon Musk. Since taking over Twitter, Musk has made a number of changes that have had a very telling impact on the follower trends of high profile figures, including politicians. Specifically, we’ve seen a significant increase in the number of Republican followers, while Democrat followers have decreased. This is a very telling trend, and one that suggests that equal rights and free speech are finally being restored to the social media landscape. Thank you, Elon Musk, for giving voices to those who have been suppressed for far too long. This is a true victory for the free speech movement.
