The Biden administration has come under fire after the Justice Department announced new gun control proposals that would regulate pistols with stabilizing braces.
According to the Daily Wire, President Joe Biden issued a directive to regulate the use of such braces after he said they could effectively turn pistols into short-barreled rifles. Federal licensing is required for weapons classified as short-barreled rifles under the National Firearms Act.
In a statement, Attorney General Merrick Garland said, “Today’s rule makes clear that firearm manufacturers, dealers, and individuals cannot evade these important public safety protections simply by adding accessories to pistols that transform them into short-barreled rifles.”
In response to Biden’s directive, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) developed the rule, which was published in the Federal Register on Friday. Owners of stabilizing braces must register their guns as short-barreled rifles under the rule.
The DOJ also said gun owners could return their braces or surrender “covered short-barreled rifles to ATF.”
As noted by FOX News, both Second Amendment groups and Republicans criticized the rule.
With the new regulation, the Biden administration has chosen to “shred the Constitution”, according to the National Rifle Association (NRA).
In a statement, Senator Mike Crapo (R-ID) called the rule “an unacceptable attack” on the Second Amendment and law-abiding citizens.”
The Senator wrote on Twitter, “The ATF’s announced rule on pistol braces today is nothing short of a massive executive branch-imposed gun registration and confiscation scheme.”
About three million stabilizing braces are currently owned in the U.S., according to estimates.
