The grassroots initiative known as the “Greater Idaho” movement gains steam, as rural Oregonians express their frustration with leftist policies dominating their state’s political decisions. Fed up with the control exerted by far-left voters from cities like Portland, residents in rural regions seek a fresh start by joining conservative Idaho.

Voters in 11 rural, conservative Oregon counties are making their voices heard. Recently, these counties approved measures to begin the process of seceding from blue-state Oregon and joining Republican-dominated Idaho. In Wallowa County, the pro-Greater Idaho side appears to be winning, with only eight votes separating it from the opposition.

Wallowa resident Garrett Mahon points out that rural Oregonians’ way of life is grounded in agriculture, forestry, and timber, industries that often clash with the values of more urban, Democratic regions. He comments on the current political imbalance, stating that if Multnomah County, home to Portland, votes one way, it essentially vetoes the rest of the state.

Events in Wallowa County signal a shift, as residents begin to challenge the status quo. The idea of joining Idaho was rejected just last year, with a 46 vote difference. However, this year, the idea is ahead by eight ballots. The noticeable swing suggests mounting dissatisfaction and growing receptiveness to the Greater Idaho proposal.

Naturally, the establishment is not keen on supporting this effort. Reports have emerged stating that the Oregon State Elections Division is now actively investigating whether the political advocacy group “Citizens for Greater Idaho” has violated state voter laws. The left
