The ABC show “The View” has been caught in its blatant hypocrisy once again. Barely days after co-host Sunny Hostin delivered a racially charged remark about WNBA player Caitlin Clark, the tune completely changed in Monday’s episode, with the hosts now swinging to praising Clark’s sport achievements.
Diving into it, the hosts busied themselves discussing a recent controversial incident during a WNBA match between Indiana Fever and Chicago Sky, where the Sky’s guard, Chennedy Carter, fouled Clark with a pretty rough shove. The WNBA classified the shove as a severe foul, but Hostin and Whoopi Goldberg, both important figures, seemed to downplay it, signaling it as a typical occurrence in contact sports.
Just a couple of weeks earlier, Hostin drew attention with her racially charged comments about Clark. However, neither Remarks nor attitude drew any backlash on the show. This recent deviation towards cheerleading Clark’s cause highlighted their inconsistencies.
Ana Navarro, another co-host, quoted views of Becky Hammon, a WNBA coach, suggesting that race had nothing to do with any hard feelings or incidents involving Clark in the league. Navarro, too, insisted on focusing on the game rather than any race-related issues, irrespective of Hostin’s previous comments.
The hypocrisy didn’t stop there. As the discussion continued, the co-hosts began heaping accolades on the athletes, with Hostin optimistically stating that the harsh competition would make each player better along with the league itself. This saw a clear turn from her previous complaints about Clark’s growing popularity in the WNBA, which she derisively called it a result of Clark’s “relatability” as white, pretty and straight.
In concluding their segment, Hostin enthusiastically encouraged viewers to watch the games, showing a fresh-on positive stance towards the league and its matches, a far cry from earlier comments that seemed to have painted a different picture.
This whole deal sounded less like honest discourse on women’s basketball, and more like a snapshot of the ever-fluctuating sentiments of these telecast hosts. Their hypocrisy might have become apparent this time around, but it just suggests a deeper instilled culture of insincerity on “The View.”
