Eighty years on, we find ourselves at the anniversary of D-Day remembering the brave souls who paved the way for the liberation of Europe from remorseless Nazi rule. As we remember, we see ABC using this platform of reflection to promote President Joe Biden’s speech, an act akin to a campaign publicity stunt.
ABC publicized President Biden’s speech for the D-Day commemoration as if it was a political tour rally. In a segment aired on ABC World News Tonight on Wednesday, June 5th, 2024, Chief White House Correspondent Mary Bruce accompanied Biden to France. The president was slated to honor the American heroes who battled and lost their lives there. However, Bruce’s narrative centered more on Biden’s objectives, like rallying support to defend Ukraine against invading Russia, which was indeed substantial.
In a surprising turn, Bruce also touched upon Biden’s planned meet with Ukrainian president Zelenskyy and how Ukraine is using U.S. weaponry to push back against Russia. The forceful retaliation of Russia, a nuclear-armed nation was mentioned. The twist in the tale was when the narrative suddenly turned campaign-oriented. Despite being on the solemn grounds of Utah beach among crosses honoring the fallen heroes, all of it was overshadowed by the sudden campaign-like narrative.
Adding to the surprising narrative further, Mary Bruce presented a veneer of Biden’s presidency as a contrast to Donald Trump’s era, which seemed out of place during a moment of tribute for our fallen heroes. Even though Bruce asserted that Biden’s remarks were not a campaign speech, the references to Biden and the political comparisons portray a different story.
The expectation was for a respectful remembrance of D-Day and the sacrifices our heroes made, but it was overshadowed by an apparent agenda. ABC, by using this platform for political promotion, raises questions about the integrity of the media house.
The attempt to use the significant anniversary of D-Day to further Biden’s political objectives shows an alarming capture of the media by the left. Icons of sacrifice and bravery being used for political leverage conveys disrespect and dishonors the memory of the gallant souls who fought on that day. Turning a platform of remembrance into a political rally illustrates a desecration of sacred memories. It’s shameful that D-Day’s solemn occasion is being exploited for political advancement.
In conclusion, we need to differentiate between solemn occasions of remembrance and election campaigns. No institution, event, or memory is a pawn for political gains. We need to honor and remember our heroes for their bravery and sacrifices, not let these honorable moments be tarnished by political campaigns. A day devoted to tribute, like the D-Day anniversary, should be treated with respect and used to honor those who gave all for our freedom.
