The Chinese government produced a new ad meant as a veiled threat to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi almost perfectly coinciding with an announcement from Taiwan that the speaker will visit the controversial island.
The new video from the People’s Liberation Army shows China’s most threatening military technology including advanced missile systems and battleships, both of which they have threatened to use against Taiwan if Pelosi makes a stop there.
On Monday the Taiwanese media confirmed a visit by House Speaker Pelosi as well. This came after Pelosi’s office released a statement over the weekend listing places in Asia she would visit that excluded Taiwan from her stops.
While Pelosi herself hasn’t confirmed the trip as definite, the media in Taiwan said she was definitely coming and due to arrive on Tuesday evening, a move that the Chinese government said would justify a full military invasion of the island.
CNN also confirmed the trip, with a Taiwanese government official telling the network that Pelosi planned to stay overnight which will likely anger the Chinese Communists even further.
For decades now China has claimed the island as its own despite Taiwan having a rebel government that receives support from around the world. The United States has traditionally provided these so-called rebels with weapons and training to hold off the Chinese military if an invasion were to occur. Even though we arm the rebels, the official stance of the US government has been to support the One China policy that views the island as part of the communist nation.
China warned that the visit from Pelosi and other high-level US politicians would “have severe negative impact on the political foundation of China-US relations, and send a gravely wrong signal to ‘Taiwan independence’ separatist forces.”
Joe Biden has pushed back on the Speaker’s visit to the nation, urging her to back off while claiming he heard the request from the military. Do you think Pelosi should go ahead with the visit in defiance of China and Biden or is it time for the US to give up our defense of Taiwan after so many years?
