Sam Brinton, a former nuclear energy official in the Biden administration, has been accused of stealing designer clothes belonging to Tanzanian fashion designer Asya Khamsin. Brinton, who identifies as “non-binary” and uses they/them pronouns, has been arrested multiple times for stealing women’s luggage at airports. The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority Police Department recently found women’s designer clothes at Brinton’s home during a search warrant. The clothes were identified as belonging to Khamsin, who reported her bag containing the clothing articles missing at Ronald Reagan National Airport in 2018.

Brinton has a history of airport thefts. In September last year, he allegedly stole a Vera Bradley suitcase from a woman at Minneapolis Airport and a suitcase from another woman at Las Vegas Airport in July of the same year. The combined value of the suitcases and their contents was more than $9,000. Brinton managed to escape jail time in both cases, with one case requiring him to undergo a mental health evaluation, write an apology letter to the victim, return the stolen property, and perform three days of community service. In the Las Vegas case, Brinton pled no contest and was given a 180-day suspended sentence and ordered to pay $3,670 in restitution.

Despite a previous history of theft, Brinton continues to be involved in criminal activity. He was recently charged with felony grand larceny in the case of Khamsin’s stolen designer clothes. Khamsin became aware of Brinton’s alleged theft when she saw photographs of Brinton wearing her designs in news articles. She filed a police report in Houston, where she lives, and the case was referred to the FBI.

Brinton, who was fired from the Office of Nuclear Energy at the Department of Energy in December 2020, garnered attention for being one of the federal government’s first “non-binary” officials. However, his behavior proves that he cannot be trusted and has no respect for the property of others. Khamsin has filed a civil lawsuit against Brinton regarding the stolen clothes.

It is appalling that Brinton has gotten away with his crimes in the past and continues to engage in illegal behavior. His actions show a complete disregard for the law and the property of others. One can only hope that justice will be served in this case, and Brinton will finally face the consequences of his criminal behavior.
