An animal shelter in Thousand Oaks, California made a new policy that bans gun owners from adopting pets under penalty of law.
The Shelter Hope Pet Shop put out a statement, saying they refuse to allow people who don’t agree with their ideologies to adopt pets.
“We do not support those who believe that the 2nd amendment gives them the right to buy assault weapons. If your beliefs are not in line with ours, we will not adopt a pet to you,” the owner’s statement read.
The letter claims that the new actions are being taken in response to the elementary school shooting in Uvalde, Texas last month.
The owner also threatened to take legal action against anyone who lies to them about supporting the NRA.
“If you lie about being a NRA supporter, make no mistake, we will sue you for fraud,” owner Kim Sill threatened in her statement.
The statement concludes by saying nobody who believes in the right to self defense with a firearm should come to their shelter.
“If you believe that it is our responsibility to protect ourselves in public places and arm ourselves with a gun – do not come to us to adopt a dog. We have a choice of who we work with.”
Interestingly, the shop also put restrictions against non-home owners. The average price of a house in Thousand Oaks is over $1 million, according to Zillow.
Sill also told NBC in an interview that she was okay with losing customers, telling the news company, “I say, fine, keep your money. If I go out of business, as a result, I go out of business. But I have to do something. And this is the only thing I can do to make the point that mass killings by people armed with guns have to stop.”
It’s a strange policy to ban people who legally own firearms from adopting a shelter animal, considering the animals need homes. It’s also dubious whether or not they could actually sue someone for lying about NRA support. Do you think they would win their cases or are they all talk?
