Miraculously a cross was left standing in the wake of a fire that consumed an entire church in Texas on Friday.
The fire broke out at the Balsora Catholic Church in Bridgeport that quickly burnt down the entire building, according to Wise County Emergency Services Department No. 2.
“A devastating loss to our community, but a sight to behold,” the department said. “The fire took the structure, but not the cross. A symbol that the building was just that, a building. The Church is the congregation, and where 2 or more gather, there He shall be also.”
The temperatures were so high that the department requested assistance from 11 other firehouses to deal with the blaze. It was so bad, in fact, that several firefighters were trapped inside when the roof of the building began to collapse. While nobody died, multiple firefighters were treated by Wise County EMS on scene.
Despite their efforts, there was no way to save the church from the intense blaze. Still, once the aftermath was settled, one thing stood out above all else. The cross located at the center of the church had somehow survived the fire despite everything else being left in a pile of ash.
While the loss of the church was certainly a hard hit for the community, churchgoers still gathered at the location on Sunday morning for an impromptu prayer service. Authorities say the source of the fire is still under investigation.
The modern world can be dangerous and confusing to navigate for many people. It’s always nice to see little miracles like this one with the cross to remind us of our faith. How do you feel when looking at the cross rising from the remains of the church?
