The father of the shooter who was arrested following the Highland Park July 4th massacre previously ran to become mayor of the city as a Democrat and was registered as a Democrat.
On Tuesday, a Chicago area judge held Robert Crimo III without bail. According to Lake County Assistant State’s Attorney Ben Dillon, the police found 83 shells and three ammunition magazines on the rooftop that the suspect used to snipe people in the parade. He reportedly fired 70 rounds from a legally purchased rifle.
He has now been hit with seven counts of first-degree murder and is being represented by a public defender. He also was said to have planned the attack for weeks beforehand. He was wearing women’s clothing so he could blend into the crowd and escape. He even covered his tattoos so that people would not “recognize him.”
The shooter’s father, Bob Crimo, ran for mayor of Highland Park in 2019 and lost to Mayor Nancy Rotering, the incumbent. He is a small business owner and owns Bob’s Pantry and Deli in Highland Park. His opponent Rotering was defeated by Crimo in a race of 2-to-1 and secured his third term. She ran her campaign on having more gun control.
According to the Next News Network, official records filed with the Illinois State Board of elections shows that Robert Crimo ran as a Democrat.
The shooter now faces a mandatory life sentence without any chance parole, says Lake County state attorney Eric Reinhart.
