Republican Nebraska Senator Ben Sasse will leave Congress by early next year to become the University of Florida’s president.
According to the New York Post, The university’s presidential search committee narrowed down 700 candidates to a dozen finalists from a pool of 700 candidates. Sasse was chosen unanimously as the only finalist.
The University of Florida Board of Trustees must approve him as president, and the Florida Board of Governors must confirm his appointment. It is expected that he will be approved after an interview in November, and he intends to accept the position.
In the event Sasse leaves, Nebraska Gov. Pete Ricketts is expected to select a replacement, and timing will be a factor. In 2020, Sasse was reelected to a second term. January 2027 is the end of that term.
Following the Jan. 6, 2021 Capitol riot, Sasse was one of the few Republicans to convict President Trump on impeachment charges, and he has strongly condemned his own GOP party for continuing to back Trump.
So, President Trump celebrated the news of Sasse’s departure.
As reported by the Washington Examiner, Trump blasted Sasse on his social media platform, Truth Social, saying the university “will soon regret hiring him.”
Trump wrote, “Great news for the United States Senate, and our Country itself. Liddle’ Ben Sasse, the lightweight Senator from the great State of Nebraska, will be resigning. If he knew he was going to resign so early in his term, why did he run in the first place? But it’s still great news! The University of Florida will soon regret their decision to hire him as their President”
He continued, “We have enough weak and ineffective RINOs in our midst. I look forward to working with the terrific Republican Party of Nebraska to get a REAL Senator to represent the incredible People of that State, not another Fake RINO!”
Having another RINO out of office is a great start to rebuilding a strong conservative party. But don’t get too excited just yet – we still have a long way to go before real conservative change can come to Washington.
