Disgraced FTX founder and Democrat super donor Sam Bankman-Fried’s family requested vegan food for him in his overcrowded, rat-infested Bahamas prison following his arrest on Monday.
Among other things, Bankman-Fried’s relatives asked the guards at Fox Hill, the Bahamas prison, to serve him vegan meals, according to a report by Bloomberg News cited by Breitbart.
However, the family’s request may be futile, given Fox Hill’s already grim conditions.
Overcrowding, poor sanitation, and low-grade medical care plague the prison, according to a 2020 report from the State Department, which also noted rat and maggot infestations, as well as small cells with only bucket toilets.
Furthermore, Bankman-Fried is not allowed to receive visitors at the prison because of Coronavirus restrictions. According to sources familiar with the situation, the FTX founder currently has a room at the prison’s maximum security unit and will remain there until his extradition hearing on February 8.
This week, Bankman-Fried’s lawyer said he planned to fight being extradited to the U.S. — where he is set to face fraud charges — but the hostile prison conditions might make him rethink his stance.
In addition, a judge has denied Bankman-Fried’s request for $250,000 cash bail and an ankle monitor.
Bankman-Fried was arrested on Monday weeks after the crypto company collapsed. He was supposed to testify Tuesday in front of the U.S. House Committee on Financial Services’ first hearing on FTX’s collapse, however, was taken into custody the evening before.
John J. Ray, the current CEO of FTX, testified in Bankman-Fried’s place on Tuesday. He blamed “grossly inexperienced and unsophisticated individuals” for FTX’s collapse. In addition, Ray testified that the scandal at FTX is simply embezzlement.
It is possible that Bankman-Fried could serve up to 115 years in prison if convicted.
The disgraceful arrest of Sam Bankman-Fried and his request for vegan food in the overcrowded, rat-infested Fox Hill prison has left many people in disbelief. It is unimaginable that, despite his pending charges which could land him up to 115 years in prison, Bankman-Fried’s family would make such an unbelievable demand. Not only does this reflect poorly on Bankman-Fried’s character, but it also serves as a reminder of the failure of FTX which caused great financial losses on investors who trusted the crypto company. Unfortunately, it looks like Bankman-Fried’s vegan meal request will most likely fall on deaf ears due to Fox Hill’s poor conditions.
