Politicians are supposed to represent their constituents, acting in the best interest of the people they serve. However, far too often political figures attempt to hide behind religion, giving them a veneer of moral superiority that’s completely undeserved. We can all see right through this tactic–it is simply a means to manipulate the emotions for the sake of the vote, apparently even church leaders have picked up on the mockery particularly on many left leaning politicians.
Joe Biden’s reaction to a question about funding for abortion is indicative of the pressures he faces from both sides of the aisle. As a Catholic, Biden is expected to remain true to his faith and traditions. This can be difficult when his views align more closely with the overall Democratic platform. His statement highlights the divide between pro-life and pro-choice forces, as well as between Biden’s own personal beliefs and his politics. While a number of Catholic bishops have spoken out against certain forms of abortion, Biden’s brusque response suggests that not all churches are unified in this regard, and that even the Pope has not taken an official stance on government funding for abortion services.
Red state reports, according to my report on Monday, a reporter asked Joe Biden about “Catholic bishops” who “demand that federal tax dollars not be used to fund abortion.”
As a devout Catholic, Biden responded angrily, “No, they are not all doing that…nor is the Pope doing that.”
Biden’s comment was untrue. A letter from the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops urges Congress to end taxpayer funding for abortions. Bishop Michael Burbidge of Arlington, Virginia — chairman of the U.S Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Pro-Life Committee — wrote that “government should never fund the destruction of innocent preborn children” and that “congressional action is required.”
Furthermore, many Catholics were upset that Biden implied Pope Francis would not oppose federal funding for abortion in addition to lying about the position of the Catholic bishops.
Bishop Joseph Strickland of the Tyler Diocese in Texas criticized Joe Biden for trying to justify his actions by using the Pope. In his criticism of Biden, he did not mince words.
Stickland said,”Mr Biden can’t be allowed to twist the words of Pope Francis in this way. I implore the Vatican press office to emphatically clarify that Pope Francis rightly calls abortion murder. It is time to denounce Biden’s fake Catholicism.”
With a radically progressive outlook on what many consider traditional values, Pope Francis has certainly raised some eyebrows at the Vatican. As many Catholics typically look to Popes for guidance, it only becomes more important that we make sure senile Uncle Joe isn’t telling the truth about him on such a sensitive issue. There are no easy roads straight to answers when it comes to faith, but one thing is for certain-the papacy should stand firmly behind those virtues that were given to us by God. Every single life regardless of how it was brought into this world belongs to the almighty and we hope this Pope understands that.
