Despite the cry for change and reform in voting rules, our founding fathers were adamant that only American citizens could have a say so in how their nation was governed. Thankfully, they had the foresight to put these laws in place to ensure fairness and justice amongst all citizens living within our borders. While democrats are eager to conform to modern opinions, thankfully we don’t live in a banana republic just yet.
On Thursday, the House of Representatives exercised their authority to protect American democracy when they passed a resolve blocking the District of Columbia from extending voting privileges to non-citizens. This resolution serves to ensure that those who live, work, and pay taxes within the Washington D.C. community have their voices heard without diluting it by non-citizens who do not share in the same rights, duties and obligations that come with being an American citizen.
Daily wire reports, in a resolution passed by the House of Representatives on Thursday, the House prohibits Washington, D.C., from allowing noncitizens to vote in local elections.
Representative Alexendria Cortez clearly did not know what she was there to talk about because this was her message.
42 Democrats joined the Republicans in opposing the Local Resident Voting Rights Amendment Act, which the District of Columbia Council approved in 2022.
An additional resolution that targets the nation’s capital, which prevents it from overhauling its criminal code, was passed by the House on Thursday as well.
After the two resolutions were passed. House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer, who introduced the D.C. voting resolution said, “today the House took the first step to prevent two of the D.C. Council’s irresponsible and dangerous laws from going into effect. These misguided efforts would allow crime to run rampant and disenfranchise American citizens in our nation’s capital.”
In accordance with the Home Rule Act, Congress reviews any legislation passed by the D.C. Council before it is signed into law.
The D.C. mayor herself wasn’t sold on the bill when it was first passed in the city council.
Another bill, overhauling D.C.’s century-old criminal code, would not take effect until October 2025. Critics warn the overhaul would embolden wrongdoers by reducing penalties for certain crimes, while supporters argue it updates and improves an outdated system.
According to NBC Washington.D.C., Mayor Muriel Bowser (D) vetoed the criminal code changes, but the D.C. Council overrode her veto. Bowser then proposed targeted changes to the revised code, such as restoring maximum penalties for gun crimes and carjackings, as well as delaying its implementation until 2027.
It is truly disgusting to see Washington D.C. city run by a group of thugs who would without hesitation pass bills like this if they had the power to do so, unchecked. Thankfully, Congress has a strong rule in place that any proposed bill must be thoroughly checked before passing it – or otherwise that city would have burned to flames long ago. All those council members that voted for those bills should be removed immediately for not doing what’s best for the country. This is precisely why Washington D.C. should never be allowed to become a state.
