The post millennial reports, Star Wars fan encyclopedia Wookieepedia has listed Luke Skywalker as a “LGBTQ+ individual”. This happened thanks to a short story written by activist writer Sam Maggs. As part of the site’s LGBTQ+ Individuals character page Luke Skywalker is listed alongside Obi-Wan Kenobi, Wilhuff Tarkin, Rae Sloane, Vel Sartha, Chelli Lona Aphra, and others.
One Twitter user asked Wookieepedia about Luke’s LGBTQ+ categorization and wrote, “Not trolling, just wondering why Luke is included in the LGBTQ+ category?” I am not saying there isn’t one, I am just not familiar with anything in canon that defines his gender, sexuality, etc besides maybe his girlfriend in the comics.?”
Wookiepedia replied with “ There is a story in which he felt romantic feelings towards a guy”
In June 2022, Lucasfilm Press released the book Stories of Jedi and Sith, a book aimed at children between 9 and 12.
According to Bounding Into Comics, “the actual story doesn’t appear to show any romantic feelings expressed by Luke Skywalker towards Sergeant Reyé Hollis of Alliance Special Forces despite Sam Magg’s clear history of pushing her activism into her stories.”
Twitter users commented on the romance in the story after it was published.
The Wayseeking Jedi wrote, “I just read “Luke on the Bright Side” from “Star Wars: Stories of Jedi and Sith” and you can’t tell me this is not a romance. Now I have to know, @SamMaggs is Luke Skywalker canonicly queer? (Please tell me he is! )”
The recent controversy over Luke Skywalker’s sexuality is just the beginning. In 2016, when JJ Abrams was a creator with the Star Wars franchise, he said that there should be more characters who identify as non-straight. Mark Hamill, who played Luke, suggested in an interview at the time that Luke could be gay. Vanity Fair reported that Hamill said “of course” Luke is gay.
In 2021, William Shatner, who played Captain Kirk in Star Trek, weighed in on the controversy about a gay Luke by pointing out that Luke got married to a woman.
Shatner tweeted “Luke got married in SWs canon so unless Tatooine was repressive & he was hiding it looks like he chose a woman named Mara.”
Some pointed out that Luke and his wife had a child named Ben.
Grand Master Chris tweeted “Luke Skywalker with his wife, Mara Jade and their newborn son, Ben.”
Disney, which supports international LGBTQ advocacy group GLSEN, and has opposed legislation protecting parental rights in cases where schools seek to keep students’ gender identity secret, is no stranger to using the latest trends in diversity as part of its programming and ethos.
In a bold and dramatic move, Disney’s “woke agenda” has revealed their controversial decision – Luke Skywalker is joining the “dark side,” Brokeback Tatooine has been realized, and Bendover Kenobi is finally here! Why does Luke’s sexual orientation matter? Why would Disney choose to uproot an entire fictional universe beloved by millions, force it into a political correctness box and disregard the story fans have cherished from childhood? Everything suggests that this was done solely to take a shot at advancing an LGBTQ agenda, with the company even financially supporting an international advocacy group and showing contempt for legislation protecting parental rights in regards to their children’s gender identities. Understandably shocked and angered, Star Wars fans have taken to social media to express their frustration over the violation of basic cultural values associated with the franchise. One thing is certainly certain – Disney just might have gone too far this time.
