The Biden administration has once again turned a blind eye to its own limits on allowing immigrants into the country, despite already expanding legal pathways for entry. Customs and Border Protection officials aren’t stopping at the 1,450 immigrants per day limit, and instead are letting an average of 1,473 immigrants into the United States every day through the CPB One app. This app has been considerably expanded under the Biden administration, with many immigrants being released legally through the app, instead of the traditional route of asylum seeking. And it’s not just the app that’s being used to let people in: the Biden government has also expanded sponsorship programs for select countries, offering 30,000 immigration slots monthly for countries such as Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Venezuela.

This news couldn’t come at a worse time, when the country is currently experiencing a historic crisis on the border. Hundreds of thousands of immigrants are crossing the southern border every month, causing huge strain on public and private resources in border states such as Texas and Arizona. So-called ‘sanctuary cities’ like New York City have also been impacted, with immigrants being bussed in and overwhelming resources for shelter and support. Democratic Mayor Eric Adams has even had to approve fliers being passed out on the border to warn incoming immigrants that the city just doesn’t have the capacity to house them.

Even with the repeal of Title 42 in May and the Biden administration claiming a 70% reduction in illegal immigration, the problem hasn’t gone away. However, the administration has simply resorted to expanding the number of legal pathways for immigrants and funneling thousands of immigrants through ports of entry, instead of using traditional routes. The numbers of illegal and inadmissible aliens entering the country has not been reduced at all, it’s just been shifted. Lora Ries, director of the Border Security and Immigration Center at The Heritage Foundation, says the administration’s claims “are deceitful”. It’s time for the Biden administration to face facts and stop ignoring its own limits on immigration, and start making the country safe and prosperous for all.
